Surge Protection Devices
The Surge Protection Device (SPD) is used to protect against electrical surges and spikes, including those caused by lightning. Scaled-down versions of such devices are sometimes installed in residential entrance electrical panels to protect household appliances from similar hazards.
What is Lightning?
Lightning is a phenomenon where adverse electrical charges generated in a rainstorm and discharged to the ground due to dielectric breakdown are visible in the atmosphere. When electrical charges are built up to such a rate in thunderclouds, the atmospheric insulation could be broken. An electrical discharge ultimately happens between these clouds or between the clouds and the ground. Electric current reaches 20-150 kA.
